Koala Crate November 2015

Koala Crate

Kiwi November 2015

Welcome to the ring Kiwi Crate… This company is a whole family of subscription boxes. Starting off as young as ages 3-4 you have the Koala crates, followed by  Kiwi crates for ages 5-8, Doodle crates for ages 9-16+ , and Tinker crates for ages 9-16+ , so a little bit of something for everyone. This company has partnered up with Highlights (many of you may know the name from the fun children’s magazine) and has been featured all over- from magazines like Parents, Family Fun and Rachel Ray, to receiving awards such as Parents Choice Gold Award and Dr. Toy’s 100 Best Children’s Products. The design principles behind Kiwi Crates’ are as follows: “inspire, create, engage, curate, deliver,” so this company makes certain each box has been “reviewed by experts,” and “tested by kids,” so you know when you order one of these it will be an age appropriate and fun box.

For this review I’ll be focusing on the Koala crate, or ages 3-4. This month, the box theme is focused on colors. Here’s what’s in the box: a color dice, jumbo crayons, water colors, color transparencies, tools to make a banner, color sheets, the Imagine magazine, and a parent guide.  Some of my favorites from this box are: the soft jumbo color dice that jingles and makes learning colors and matching a lot of fun; the crayons are jumbo and easy for little hands to grab onto; and the imagine magazine because it brought back memories from when I was a kid.

So why did this company win my affections/attention? Because, in a time where kids are able to wield technology better than most adults it is nice to have something hands-on, creative, and interactive for them to work on. Concerned that maybe you as the guide might not be able to facilitate creativity? This is the other reason this box won my affections- the guide gives you questions to help prompt learning, ideas for play, and a “messiness meter,” yes, that’s right, go into the craft knowing exactly what you are getting into ;).

Prices for crates start at just over $17 a month for a 12 month subscription (shipping is free), but keep in mind you pay up front (12 month $205, 6 month $110, 3 month $60). If you are looking to go all-in you can even order for up to 36 months for a deeper discount for just $12.95 a month (24 months is available as well $14.95). And, if you are looking for a bonus round, select “upgrade to deluxe” at check out for an additional $9 you can have a book sent each month as well (free shipping).
